  1. If you have Adobe Type Manager and have been playing around with the 
  2. many Type 1 fonts which have recently become available in PC format 
  3. (Adobe says that there are more than 10,000 Type 1 fonts available, 
  4. most variations of Helvetica probably) then this will be of interest 
  5. to you. 
  6.  
  7. The accompanying file, fonttabl.doc, is a Word for Windows (tested 
  8. with version 1.1 only) file which consists of a table containing 
  9. characters 32 through 255 of the ANSI character set.  You can use this 
  10. to get a printout of the complete character set available for a number 
  11. of different fonts or use it as a sample sheet to cut special 
  12. characters to paste into your own document.  You'll find this 
  13. especially useful for symbol and dingbat fonts.  Then too, many public 
  14. domain and shareware fonts don't have standard character mappings or 
  15. complete character sets and you'll need to see exactly what you've got 
  16. available to you.  Other surprises may await you in the further 
  17. reaches of your favorite font. 
  18.  
  19. I have provided a couple of macros which make it easy to get samples 
  20. of all your fonts.  They are: 
  21.  
  22. 1. A macro to print all of the fonts which you have installed in 
  23. Windows.  You invoke this by selecting "Print All Fonts" from the 
  24. Utility menu or by pressing <Ctrl><Shft>2.  If you are using ATM with 
  25. a laser printer on a network, you might want to go and get some lunch 
  26. while this macro does its work.

  28. 2. A macro to reformat the font table for the font, size and style that 
  29. you select.  You invoke this by selecting "Select New Font" from the 
  30. Utility menu or by pressing <Ctrl><Shft>1.  This will bring up a 
  31. dialog box with a list box containing all of the fonts installed for 
  32. WinWord and several check boxes for different type styles.  (If you 
  33. have a lot of fonts installed and/or a slow computer, it may take 
  34. some time while the macro sorts the font list.)  When you select 
  35. "OK", the macro reformats the entries in the font table according to 
  36. your specifications and inserts the font name, size and style 
  37. information before the table.

  39. If you want a sample sheet for later use, then execute "File Save As" 
  40. and pick a suitable name.  Otherwise, just print the document and 
  41. don't save it when you are done.  Of course, if there is a character 
  42. in a printed font table you'd like to use just look up its ANSI code 
  43. in the table (eg. "L" is code 076) then hold down the <Alt> key, type 
  44. zero using the numeric keypad, the three digit ANSI code and finally 
  45. release the <Alt> key. The specified character will be inserted. 
  46.  
  47. Bugs:  All right, misfeatures then.  For reasons of it's own, WinWord 
  48. doesn't display or print some characters, instead substituting 
  49. something else.  These are: 
  50.  
  51.   ╖ character 149, nominally the bullet, is always shown as character 
  52.     111 (normally lower case Oh)
  53.   ╖ character 150, the en-dash, is always constructed of three dashes
  54.     (character 45).  Sometimes this works well and sometimes not.
  55.   ╖ character 151, the em-dash, is always constructed of two dashes
  56.     (character 45).  This means that the em-dash and the en-dash are
  57.     effectively reversed.
  58.   ╖ character 147, the open double quote, is always constructed of a
  59.     pair of open single quotes (character 145).  If character 145 does
  60.     not look like a single quote then the result will be ugly.
  61.   ╖ character 148, the close double quote, is always constructed of a
  62.     pair of close single quotes (character 146).
  63.   ╖ character 160 is the non-breaking blank and never prints.

  65. If you are not getting the font you want, it may be due to:
  66.  
  67.   ╖ some fonts are intrinsically italic (or bold, etc.) so you must 
  68.     select the appropriate type style or else WinWord will display its 
  69.     best guess at a similar font without that style.
  70.   ╖ Remember that when you install new fonts in Windows or via ATM
  71.     that they are not available in WinWord until you re-setup your 
  72.     printer.
